This story is horrible. The author is horrible to his protagonists, and every chapter is excruciating to read. This exemplifies the tenet of "never go easy on your heroes," as calamity after calamity comes upon them. The worst part is that the author had coerced me into caring about them so much that I was forced to read to the very bitter end of almost 2,000 pages of torture, irrationally hoping that the author might give them a happy ending. I'll never read it again, but I'll never forget it, either.

Few authors are able to write an intelligent fantasy book that not only has excellent literary attributes, but is also entertaining while discussing a variety of social issues. Brent Weeks has. He has done it with the night angel trilogy as well as his Prism trilogy. He has a fine skill for telling visually powerful sequences while still developing the story and characters. His action and combat sequences are among the greatest that I have ever read, and he is greatly skilled at describing the minutiae of martial arts techniques in a way that even a layman to the methods of combat can visualize and understand. I applaud his skill, and look forward to what I hope and expect will be a long and prosperous career.

First off let me say that this book is very deep, it is emotional, and it is uplifting. The emotional roller coaster is never still. This will have you going from Death and hatred to Love and adoration. If you are looking for a very easy read, this is not it. At times I did not want to continue reading because I couldn't stand what was happening and what I thought would happen next. I could not put it down because I just had to know what would happen next and if I was wrong in my preconceptions. The only bad thing about this book is that it had an end. I hope the Author chooses to revisit this fantasy world in the near future with more adventure.
