La schiavitù è esistita per secoli e per un lungo tempo è stata anche giuridicamente consentita. Oggi, nonostante le proibizioni legali del diritto, se ne registrano ancora numerosi casi.
Il testo offre sintetici spunti sulla condizione dello schiavo nell'antichità (nel diritto romano, ma anche nella letteratura antica ed in particolare nella poesia di Orazio) e sul fenomeno della schiavitù dei nostri giorni, per come emerso nella giurisprudenza di legittimità nazionale e in quella della CEDU.
