A couple things I need to preface before I dive in here. I have to mention these things prior to going into my review so you can see the meaning behind a couple things I will say later. First, It is very rare for me to enjoy a second novel in a series, its nothing against the book or the author, but 2nds are for build up to the final and they always seem to drag for me, not a lot of action Second, Dystopian and Angel books tend to top my list when it comes to YA enjoyments. I’m not sure which one I enjoy more it just really depends on my mood. BUT with the huge rush in Dystopian the past year and a half I have really started losing my faith in authors abilities to build a dystopian society that isn’t so farfetched that I can’t get into it, or, the society isn’t developed and written well enough that you can get into the where the characters are really coming from. So with those items now outlined for you all… HOLY AMAZING 2ND NOVEL! I want to send a very big hug over to Veronica Roth…*HUGS* I can officially put my foot in my mouth thanks to you…you have restored my hope in series readings again. I, as well as Roth’s huge fan base waited and waited for the release of Insurgent, though as much as I couldn’t wait, I dreaded it. I knew in the back of my mind as much as I wanted to read it, it was just going to make me mad or do the a-typical 2nd series build up and leave me hanging, needing and less than impressed. Well, let me take a moment and bow to Veronica Roth and insert my foot in my mouth…Ok, now that that is out of the way, on to the reasons why Roth is amazing. Action. Action…and some more Action. This is a key faction that mid-series novels are usually lacking for me and Insurgent had more action than I knew what to do with. The situations, arguments and fights within this book blew me away. I stayed up until 3am (on a work night) because I kept going, ok I’ll finish this chapter and go to bed, oh wait, I can’t now, ok after this one, oh wait can’t now either. Once my heart slowed after I was finished I was left speechless and stuck with idolism for Roth and her genius. Every page turn was not what I was expecting out of Insurgent and that my friend is what some YA Dystopia books are missing. Romance. YA Dystopia + Romance can sometimes = disaster. Well, again, Roth restored my faith in the ability to write Romance into an Action Dystopian and make it believable. Not everything is sunshine and roses when it comes to Romance, especially in a lapsed or lapsing society, and Roth recognized that. So again, I will graciously bow to Roth. It was shocking; Tris and Four have an actual relationship, with real disagreements and fears. Things that we can relate to or understand where the characters are coming from. It was beautiful and heart wrenching in parts, so thank you again Veronica, I envy your abilities. I also love the development of Tris in this book. We knew her already from Divergent, but, Insurgent took her to a whole new level. She’s rounded, and real, she has feelings and power and the combination in this book was unreal. And lastly, and I did save it for last because it is one thing that really solidifies my feelings on how Roth got a mid-series Dystopian right for me. Development. We didn’t get 200+ pages of development of just the current situation. We got history and glimpses into the future. We got explanation of the past and it was believable. This gives true depth to the story, characters and world that was built between Divergent and Insurgent, and now I can walk away satisfied and wanting.
