Secondo l’autore, il vero grande mistero della Chiesa sarebbe proprio la pedofilia, inscritta in modo profondo nell’identità stessa dell’istituzione. Per affrontare seriamente il problema, la Chiesa dovrebbe perciò far emergere la propria “responsabilità in questi crimini, in quanto istituzione”. Ma l’assunzione di colpa è quasi sempre sostituita da un atteggiamento che tende a liquidare le accuse come becero scandalismo e come propaganda anticattolica, creando il terreno ideale per la perpetrazione di nuovi abusi.
