About this ebook

A lass begging to marry him might top the list of “oddest things to happen,” but Chief Adam Macquarie is desperate. And no matter how much he hates to do it, he’s not above lying to get what he wants. Starting with the fact that he just omitted the truth about the situation back at his home—where there are no women and only a handful of other people. Because he has a secret need for a wife himself, one she won’t be too happy about when she finds out.

Lark Montgomerie is thrilled the brawny chief agrees to save her from her drunken father’s machinations of wedding her off to the first fool that agrees. He’s easy on the eyes and no one can be worse than her current options. Now a new life awaits her, on an exciting Scottish isle no less, and nothing will dampen her spirits. That is, until she arrives in her new homeland and realizes more than a few things are amiss...

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it. What a fantastic start to another series. I am already looking forward to the other Macquarie brothers! Another plus was catching up with prior characters of the Highland Isles series. The Macquarie brothers are at the Beltane festival looking for a bride. They need to rebuild their clan and their home on Ulva (Wolf) Isle. A "witch" placed a curse on the clan over a century before and only the brothers remain on the isle. Lark Montgomerie and her family are also at the festival. Lark finds out that two men are after her hand in marriage. She despises them both. She hides up a tree and that is where Adam Macquarie (chief of the clan) finds her after spying her slipper amongst the leaves. The adventures and mysteries that surround these two were fascinating to read. I was so intent to discover the mystery in the happenings on the isle that before I knew it, I had finished. I was completely enchanted by the couple (and of course the remaining brothers!) There were some "sexy" scenes but the details were so highly glossed over, they were not offensive (at least to me.) That being said, of course, if you adore a wonderful historical (especially Scottish) romance, I would highly recommend this to anyone over the age of 18.

Thrilling start to a promising new series! OK, I'll admit I was hooked immediately by the entry into the Macquarie clan Bible, and it just kept getting better from then on. Adam, the eldest of five brothers and the next in line to resurrect the Macquarie clan on Ulva (Wolf) Isle, is in need of a wife and Lark is needing an immediate escape from her deteriorating family situation. Their same-day marriage doesn't leave time for full disclosure on either side, resulting in a push-pull between the two as they get to know each other, fall in love, and find out all the hidden secrets on both sides little by gradual little. This was written so sweetly and cleverly as it demonstrated the tenuous trust building between them while reminding us how fragile it can be. There's an evil plan at work in the background that we don't find out about until nearly the very end, but it explains all the assorted questions from throughout the story. Adam and Lark's marriage is real and honest and deeply sustaining long before we get to the end, making the HEA all the sweeter for it. This story has everything I could wish for - a swashbuckling, swoon-worthy hero, a plucky heroine with impeccable aim, all the heat and action and suspense that can possibly fit into one book, and characters that easily come alive for the reader. I loved every page, and I look forward to reading more about the Macquarie brothers. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Scotland 1545 Filled with humor and a highlander not soon forgotten, Heather pulls us in for a wonderful start to a new series! I know when I pick up one of her books, I will be entertained, sigh several times and never want the end to come! Adam, Laird of Clan Macquarie and Lark meet unexpectedly to say the least! She is up hiding in a tree, when he walks by and sees a slipper on the ground. Looking up, he sees a beautiful lass and soon learns there are men looking for her, having marriage in mind! Her father is determined to marry her off since she has four sisters at home. When Lark is forced to make a choice of bridegrooms, Adam steps up and she picks him. (Oh I would have picked him too!). But she may be in for a surprise as she goes back to his clan.... Of course she has her own secret. Loved, loved this fun tale, that had me smiling and laughing out loud at times, which is the best medicine ever!! Cannot wait for Beck's story!
