History comes alive in this stunning romance! From the very beginning, we're off to an exciting and historically relevant start. The villain in this story is a real-life villain, and the author brilliantly ties his crimes to those of a fictional father to our fictional heroine, Anna. And I don't use that term just for convention - she truly is a heroine in her own right throughout this book. She's had to become a fierce warrior to protect herself and her sisters from a threat that is, unfortunately, still all too familiar even in today's "advanced" civilization. Callum, the middle of five brothers, feels he has a lot to prove to his brothers and so he's determined to complete his mission to bring Anna and her sister, Dora, back to Scotland to join their older sister, Lark, now married to Callum's eldest brother, Adam. He doesn't understand why she refuses to leave England, but he more than understands the threats against her from the pirate, Jandeau. There's plenty of romance along the way, and the action includes secrets, murder, betrayal, and a couple of particularly nasty villains who will make you disown any English roots in your own ancestry. Callum and Anna's love is tested again and again, by themselves and the threats against them, and eventually Callum is outnumbered eleven to one and has to rely on an assortment of unlikely warriors to see them all to safety. Their HEA proves successful in bringing more healing to the willow tree that symbolizes the rebirth of Wolf Isle, and the letter from her once childhood friend serves as a beautiful epilogue that reminds us that the Me, Too movement has its roots buried deep in our shared history. It's a beautiful story from start to finish, and as much as I loved Adam and Beck in the first two books, I have to admit Callum completely stole my heart and he's now my favorite Macquarie brother. If you love swoon-worthy, swash-buckling Highlander heroes, you don't want to miss this book. It's everything I'd hoped for and more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
