If you never read another Batman comic you must read this one. This four issue story brought the Dark Knight back in a way that blew minds when it was first published in 1986, and over 30 years later it's still just as amazing. It was the success of Dark Knight Returns that made Batman popular enough to produce the first movies, but it wasn't until Batman Begins that the movies finally caught up to the comic books, at least in tone. Long live the Dark Knight!

This is the definitive beginning of the true Dark Knight era. Miller has his own ways, but they fit for those who think outside the box.
