The Omehi people have been fighting an unwinnable war for almost two hundred years. The lucky ones are born gifted. One in every two thousand women has the power to call down dragons. One in every hundred men is able to magically transform himself into a bigger, stronger, faster killing machine.

Everyone else is fodder, destined to fight and die in the endless war.

Young, gift-less Tau knows all this, but he has a plan of escape. He's going to get himself injured, get out early, and settle down to marriage, children, and land. Only, he doesn't get the chance.

Those closest to him are brutally murdered, and his grief swiftly turns to anger. Fixated on revenge, Tau dedicates himself to an unthinkable path. He'll become the greatest swordsman to ever live, a man willing to die a hundred thousand times for the chance to kill the three who betrayed him.

The Rage of Dragons launches a stunning and powerful debut epic fantasy series that readers are already calling "the best fantasy book in years."

I respect the authors ability to write fiction with black characters without hitting you over the head with the fact that they are black. Heros arrive in all colors. This isn't a great black epic fantasy. It is one of the best epic fantasy series I've started recently. I appreciate a magic system that is other and not all fireballs and weather control. I appreciate a Grey hero. Everyone can be seen as the hero or bad guy depending upon whom you think is more at fault. Still left me like questioning some decisions of the author. Only reason it lost a star. A must read.

Bold, brutal and gripping, this book had me on the edge of my seat for the entire read. Its pacing is brilliant and very well focused leaving no page wasted. There is so much grand and intense action that is beautifully choreographed in the words on the page. The only downside for me was that the terminology used to describe the classes of people and the way of living in the world was not introduced in a very clear way. The naming of the classes did not come quickly and it wasn't until the middle of the story that I really wrapped my head around the terminology. To add to this, the terminology wasn't exactly memorable. I feel like after reading it, if I had to name all of the classes of military out of context I would have a difficult time doing so. I cannot wait for more from Evan Winter. This was an excellent debut from a brilliant author!

Evan has always loved fantasy novels, but when his son was born, he realized that there weren't many epic fantasy novels featuring characters who looked like him. So, before he ran out of time, he started writing them.
