About this ebook

In this "relentlessly gripping, brilliant" epic fantasy (James Islington), an ousted queen must join forces with a young warrior in order to reclaim her throne and save her people.

Tau and his Queen, desperate to delay the impending attack on the capital by the indigenous people of Xidda, craft a dangerous plan. If Tau succeeds, the Queen will have the time she needs to assemble her forces and launch an all out assault on her own capital city, where her sister is being propped up as the 'true' Queen of the Omehi.

If the city can be taken, if Tsiora can reclaim her throne, and if she can reunite her people then the Omehi have a chance to survive the onslaught.

"This gritty series set in a South African–inspired fantasy world is an intense reading experience, and the second book is just as phenomenal as the first."—BuzzFeed News

Absolutely loved the first book. Found the second book in this installment to be disappointing. It felt as if this was written by a different author. The story in itself is intriguing and I had high expectations for this continuation but the character personalities are completely not what I expected compared to the first book. The story is at it's best when the protagonist are on the move and attempting to accomplish something, which is to be expected. But when it comes to the emotional exchanges of the characters it is cringeworthy. It was almost unreadable in the beginning while going through the emotional and political turmoil, it takes until halfway through that it begins to gain some semblance to what made the first book such a great read. Great story I’ll definitely buy the next book but I must say I was disappointed in the drop in quality from the first book.

The Fires of Vengeance is what Rage of Dragons set it up to be. The world that Evan Winter has created is in full show here, we travel to more parts of the peninsula that the Omehi have settled and learn more about the roots of their culture. Though there is some more world building, the majority of this book is focused around the war that the main cast is fighting. Following the example set by Rage of Dragons, this book is a breakneck reading experience with little to no rest between set-peices/scenes. This was very enjoyable for me but may not be for other readers as the pace can get a little tiring, but the small quiet moments are more impactful after these long stretches of blood and death. The character work done in these moments is wonderful and engaging and they pay off well. I do wish there were more, but i don't feel like its what this series is for. This is one of the best sequels I have read from a "new" author in a long time and am ecstatic to see where Book 3 can take us.

I love loved the first book in this series, I’m half way through this one and I love it. This is one of the first books to have me immersed in the action. One of the main reasons this has become my favorite book/series is because the main character actually does things that’s SPECIAL. I get tired of reading books were the main character is supposed to be special in some way but never really does anything special. I can see the growth of Tau from the first book and this one, him skillfully beating opponents leaving them in disbelief, I love it!!!

About the author

Born in England to South American parents, Evan Winter was raised in Africa near the historical territory of his Xhosa ancestors. Evan has always loved fantasy novels, but when his son was born, he realized that there weren't many epic fantasy novels featuring characters who looked like him. So, before he ran out of time, he started writing them.
