Die Novelle ist eine fiktive autobiographische Darstellung des Schriftstellers und seine Liebesaffäre mit einer Tänzerin, Jeanne Duval. Baudelaire kannte Jeanne Duval auf der Schwester-Inseln, Mauritius und Reunion (1841). Er beschreibt Jeanne Duval in verschiedene Texte als die "Schwarze Venus", die Verkörperung der "Femme fatale", sinnlich und exotisch.
