La tecnica della forzatura del radicchio rosso tardivo di Treviso, documentata dagli anni '60 dell'Ottocento, si è progressivamente affinata grazie al contributo di valenti agronomi e soprattutto allo spirito di sperimentazione dei contadini locali. L'ipotesi che a "inventare" il radicchio nella sua forma più pregiata sia stato il belga Francesco Van den Borre, giunto a Treviso verso il 1860, è in realtà un'invenzione dello scrittore Giuseppe Maffioli. Per sostenere la sua tesi, Maffioli ha modificato un testo originale di Aldo, figlio di Francesco Van den Borre.
