Horowitz connects these leadership examples to modern case-studies, including how Louverture’s cultural techniques were applied (or should have been) by Reed Hastings at Netflix, Travis Kalanick at Uber, and Hillary Clinton, and how Genghis Khan’s vision of cultural inclusiveness has parallels in the work of Don Thompson, the first African-American CEO of McDonalds, and of Maggie Wilderotter, the CEO who led Frontier Communications. Horowitz then offers guidance to help any company understand its own strategy and build a successful culture.

This book is one of the few readings that I have picked that deceived me. I guess I had high expectations. Just the title of the book is amazing. But the book feels unfinished and rushed. The book is also confusing and going everywhere in some chapters. I can’t say the book is useless, I learned a few things in this book. It’s actually a great book to learn about the story of Toussaint Louverture but I am not sure Ben is the right story teller for this piece of history. He taints it a bit too much in the book. What deceives me the most in this book seems to be the obsession by the author about violence. Most of his examples to prove his points are from violent ones, Toussaint (revolution), Samurai’s, Genghis Khan, Shaka Senghor (convicted murderer). It’s getting confusing at one point how one can use tyrants and criminals as examples of culture examples. He tries too hard to find examples that are exempts of survivor bias but they all are actually. I finished the book but at one point it felt like a burden when it should have been a breeze if you talk about proper human actions. Anyway, isn’t Ben the CEO of two past public corporations that went into the ground with amazing ideas behind them? If you want a better book about business culture I suggest you 10 times more Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard. Ben incarnates most of what’s wrong regarding corporate America while Yvon is addressing most of those issues. Yvon is the true smart guy while Ben tries hard to be smart but doesn’t seem to be surrounded by the right people. Maybe it’s just his culture that tainted him and since he’s deep in it he can’t realize it.

About the author

Ben Horowitz is the cofounder and general partner of Andreessen Horowitz, a Silicon Valley–based venture capital firm that invests in entrepreneurs building the next generation of leading technology companies. The firm's investments include Airbnb, GitHub, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter. Previously he was cofounder and CEO of Opsware, formerly Loudcloud, which was acquired by Hewlett-Packard for $1.6 billion in 2007. Horowitz writes about his experiences and insights from his career as a computer science student, software engineer, cofounder, CEO, and investor in a blog that is read by nearly ten million people. He has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the New Yorker, Fortune, the Economist, and Bloomberg Businessweek, among others. Horowitz lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Felicia.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. An award-winning filmmaker, literary scholar, journalist, cultural critic, and institution builder, Professor Gates has authored or coauthored twenty-two books and created eighteen documentary films, including Finding Your Roots.
