볼테르 Voltaire
본명은 프랑수아마리 아루에. 1694년 파리에서 공증인의 아들로 태어났다. 비극 「오이디푸스」를 시작으로 서사시, 희곡, 콩트, 역사서 등의 다양한 글을 발표했다. 17세기 고전주의의 계승자로 인정받았으며, 신앙과 언론의 자유를 추구하는 계몽사상가로 활약했다. 1778년 84세의 나이로 숨을 거두었다.
