About this audiobook

ECPA BESTSELLER • A compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favor of a slower, simpler way of life—from the New York Times bestselling author of Practicing the Way

“Prophetic, practical, and profoundly life giving . . . provides a way forward that creates hope, hunger, and a vision of a beautiful life. I consider this required reading.”—Jon Tyson, lead pastor of the Church of the City New York and author of Beautiful Resistance

“Who am I becoming?”

That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:

“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.”

It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.

A perfect gift for Father’s Day and graduation that inspires readers to focus on what really matters, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry is a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Regardless of where you live, where you may fall on the enneagram diagram, your career, or even where you are spiritually… hurry is a core issue plaguing our daily rhythm. Doesn’t even just the thought of slowing down cause you to take a breath and instantaneously put your soul at ease? In The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry John-Mark addresses the call for human rest. He invites you to establish and live within structured pattern, gives you permission to say “no” when you need or simply even want to, he encourages you to exercise sabbath, and exemplifies the exceeding joy that we all often miss because we are caught in this fast-paced, buzz culture. This text truly could not have come at a better time for our desperate, anxiety riddled society. Much like the rest of John-Mark’s pieces, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry is full of digestible wisdom. As a fellow Portland resident and flawed enneagram type 1, John-Mark’s teachings to slow down have truly become a key element in my own therapy. And bonus: they’ve also been the cheapest element! Seriously, do yourself a favor and give this book a read. There is so much good for you to unpack here.

John Mark Comer is such a gift to this generation. His life, teachings and writings always have me leaving with so much to learn, and follow after. Though, it's not him, but the Life that he follows too. In this young adulthood season I am in, he has just been a huge encouragment and example as I follow the Way of Jesus. this book is a breath of fresh air and has wanting to make so many changes in my hurried life of instant gratification.

Challenging in one of the best ways possible. The first book in a long time to say in every way to do less. Not to make room to do more, but to make room to sit and be still. Specifically, to be still with God. I loved it from start to finish, and will definitely be listening again and taking notes!
