About this audiobook

Now a STARZ® Original Series produced by FremantleMedia North America starring Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, and Pablo Schreiber.

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined. Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies . . . and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

“Mystery, satire, sex, horror, poetic prose—American Gods uses all these to keep the reader turning the pages.”—Washington Post

I like Neil Gaimen I truly do. But this was a miss for me. It felt like I was listening to a book a teenager had written. Things like naming your main character shadow just make it feel a bit silly. The narration was fine.

I saw the show before purchasing the audio book. That said I love both equally. What this audio book hails above all others I've listened to is the full voice cast. I don't recall or own any audio books with a full voice cast. Simply impressive as, for myself, it makes identifying each and every character distinctly without any confusion. Highly recommend this to everyone. Well done Neil. Bravo! 👏

I listened to the audio book version and the voices fit the dialog so perfectly. It gave it a very vibrant appeal that enhanced the listening experience. If you have a choice of methods to consume this book, I'd recommend this format. I am a fan of Sandman, so I had to check out this book. It sometimes gives the Sandman vibes, but it is a totally different world painted here. I like how much he leans into details to make the world feel real. The main story is straight forward, but figuring out the characters adds some excitement. I listened to some parts repeatedly, to really understand what was happening, not from a lack of clarity, but from the complexity. I enjoyed this book and would like to see how well it adapted into live action, as I heard of the show first, before hearing of the book.
