About this movie

Humanity has been all but destroyed by a fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh eating "hungries." Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects. At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments. When the base falls, one little girl escapes and must discover what she is, and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.

To be fair, I am not normally a fan of dystopian horror. Zombie movies bore me. This was a welcome surprise and exception to my normal viewing. The character development is excellent from the start of the movie. You find yourself growing attached to characters in ways that are difficult for the genre. The acting is seamless to a point where it's easy to forget that this is a work of fiction. There are brief moments of comedy that were like a breaths of air after holding it for minutes at a time. The ending - no spoilers - almost had me in tears. This is definitely worth a rent if not an actual purchase.

So first off this isn't a new spin on zombies. On film it is but The Last of Us has pretty much the same concept. The movie is good it hits a lot of the ending plot. But it ruined the impact of a lot of the scenes from the book. There was a lot more dialogue between Melanie Dr Caldwell and Sgt Petersen especially at the end. Overall okay.

On its own the movie is well paced, more thriller than horror, and enjoyable. If you like post apocalyptic/zombie you'll be at home with this. If you are hoping for a 100% adaptation from the book you'll be slightly disappointed. I understand due to time constraints some of the changes but it felt like the most of the emotion was taken out of the movie.
