I am tempted to give this two starts but some of the things I read here are quite... Nice. They are capable of putting a smile on someone's face but saying this as euphemistically as possible the way he explains things is quite simple. It got really annoying and I didn't make it past a quarter of the book. If God is the reason why we search to do good that's nice and this is a "nice" book to point that out.

This was a fantastic reinforcement of the basics of the Christian faith embedded in applicable discussion of everyday life. As a long term Christian, I enjoyed his thought processes and innumerable quotes that illustrate enormously deep thoughts into simple, understandable terms. That said, from a literary point of view I was not crazy about the writing style. Being a transcript from a radio program, the language was very simple and plain which made it difficult for me to stay engaged. Summary: I loved the function. Wasn't crazy about the form...

Worth reading for any budding skeptic, this was characterized by a Christian friend as the "Mount Everest of apologetics". If you find the arguments in this book compelling and convincing, then you have some work ahead of you as a skeptic. Try not to read along with any refutation guide--see if you can spot the problems for yourself. While the arguments presented do have devastating flaws, this is to be expected: 60 years of counter-apologetics have passed since the original release. However, C.S. Lewis has an engaging, articulate writing style that both engages and persuades. He anticipates objections and attempts to answer them. While I did not find his explanations satisfactory, this most commonly arose from my understanding of modern biology and physics that did not exist during his time. All in all, a solid read for Christians and non-Christians alike.

About the author

Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics The Chronicles of Narnia. To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and have been transformed into three major motion pictures.
