This book offers fantastic insight and advice, so much so you'll have to force yourself to remember that it's suppose to be about painting. I think this book is required reading for a certain kind of mind and for any kind of artist. There is tremendous wisdom within these pages.

About the author

Robert Henri (1865–1929) studied art in Philadelphia and Paris. He embraced Impressionism as a student and later, as a leader of the Ashcan School, rejected it in pursuit of a more truthful reality. He taught at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the Art Students League of New York, developing a reputation as a teacher who encouraged independent thought in his students. The Art Spirit, originally published in 1923, is a collection of Henri's thoughts by former pupil Margery Ryerson.
