Operating a ham radio is fun and most people's interest in amateur radios are driven by the fun aspect of it. Asides the excitement, Amateur radio could be very helpful in emergency situations especially when other services are unavailable. A typical example of an emergency case is the 1992 Hurricane Andrew that hit South Florida. It destroyed the common means of communication, its antennas, utility grid, and its cellular networks were all destroyed leaving victims almost helpless. At that time, amateur radio was the only source of communication and some payphones that were connected with underground lines. They are also used for many other community services

Radio Amateurs around the world provide a valuable community service.

This book will teach you how to operate one, learn about tuning to the right frequency, when to tune and making consistent contacts and much, much more.

I thought this would teach me how to use my ham radio, or at least learn some terminologies and skills used in actual radio communication. This is nothing but an introduction part from a textbook in college. Indeed, this is a freaking waste of money!

I'm always a bit suspicious of the "Dummies" and "Idiots" books, as many of them really short on information. But this book is really full of information about how to get started in ham radio. It is well organized and well written. One note: this has very little detail about how to pick out your first radio; plenty of general information, but it is not a product selection guide. But if you read it, you will realize, as the author recommends, that the best way to buy a radio is to make some friends in the ham radio community and get some help picking out equipment. But I can't recommend this book enough....really helpful. This is an introduction to the Ham Radio hobby, rather than an in-depth technical look at what you'll need to pass your first exam. What I was looking for--but did not find--was the card-stock summary of the most important points, aka the "cheat-sheet" which I'm used to finding in these books.

Very interesting, the story makes you think a lot what would happen in the event of a catastrophe and there is no way to communicate? The only thing that this 2020 needs to be worse but the truth is that the book is very instructive at least to learn to work as an operator in a radio booth will serve you, hehe very instructive and it serves to hang out in the quarantine, seriously this book in case of an emergency could help you
