Being the first volume, the story is just at the start; character introductions, getting the reader settled on the world, setting up the plot and such. First off the characters. And they have great introductions- showing their attitude, personality, relations, and most importantly goals however defined or vague they may be. Little details told about the character are relevant to the story which is a neat way to naturally give reason as to why the characters act the way they do. Second, the world building. Notably taking cues from the real world places but remixed like New Britain- literally the title of the book and setting is about the theorized unknown southernmost continent back in the pre-industrial era. This lets readers see a familiar yet different world to readily immerse themselves into the setting. And lastly the plot, which I have not a lot to say except can't wait for the next volume. Volume 1 is always going to be relegated to character introductions first, maybe worldbuilding, and then plot or story. It does a great job setting up the inciting incident that will lead to the actual journey that the story will take. Overall a wonderful and refreshing read.
