Karya-karya Kawabata secara halus menyuarakan pandangan hidup Jepang dan dominasi nasib. Bagaikan haiku, karyanya merekam peristiwa-peristiwa dan perlambangannya. Kawabata meninggal bunuh diri pada 16 April 1972.
