About this ebook

The award-winning masterpiece by one of today's most honored writers, Ursula K. Le Guin!

The Word for World is Forest

When the inhabitants of a peaceful world are conquered by the bloodthirsty yumens, their existence is irrevocably altered. Forced into servitude, the Athsheans find themselves at the mercy of their brutal masters.

Desperation causes the Athsheans, led by Selver, to retaliate against their captors, abandoning their strictures against violence. But in defending their lives, they have endangered the very foundations of their society. For every blow against the invaders is a blow to the humanity of the Athsheans. And once the killing starts, there is no turning back.

First U K LeGuin book I've read. Still one of my favorites. A lot of ISHI IN TWO WORLDS in this book. Very well done. One thing I do not like is equating American soldiers in Vietnam with Captain Davidson. They don't deserve it. The Viet Cong and NVA were a bunch of ruthless Communists who committed deliberate atrocities against Roman Catholics and those who supported Saigon and their families, including children. Perhaps Ms. LeGuin needs to apologise to Vietnam veterans. Otherwise an excellent book.

Somehow I missed this back in the 70s and early 80s when I first read Ursula LeGuin. When I heard of her passing a few weeks ago, I was surprised at how strong personal sense of loss I felt. The Disposessed has long been a treasure to me that I've revisited every so often. But I was filled with a desire to all the Hainish Ecumen related work. When I started reading World For The World, I immediately felt, perhaps like an Aschaen dreamer in the novel, that Ms. Leguin was more with me than ever.
