This report examines (1) the economic and demographic characteristics of child workers, (2) the number of serious injuries sustained by children detected by the Dept. of Labor as being illegally employed, and (3) Labor1s policy with regard to penalizing employers illegally employing children who sustain serious injuries and to child labor violations generally. The report relied on 3 data sources: the Bureau of the Census1s March 1998 Supplement to the Current Population Survey, Dept. of Labor child labor inspection records, and Labor1s FY1990 Operation Child Watch enforcement sweep records.
