With this series, there's been a lot of ups and downs. The first two books were great young adult novels. The struggle of hunger, fear, and uncertainty. The first year of the meteor striking the moon was tough on both Alex and Miranda. And while I'm glad that the third and fourth book were written, they just were not on the same level as the first two. You will not have as strong of a connection to Jon as you will with either Miranda or Alex. Buy it to just finish the series. Because that's all this book is. A finisher.

This was a difficult book for me to read. I dislike Jon because he was selfish and ungrateful but I could easily see how he could become that way given his living situation. Many disturbing things took place in this book.. basically the Grubs are slaves and the Claver men do whatever they want with them.. its hard to accept reading stuff like that but again I can easily see that happening in a world like this.. it happens in our world today, just not as brutally in some countries. 2nd book is still the best

I breezed through this book, because it kept my attention, as every other book in the series has. I didn't feel quite as invested in the character's emotions as I had in the other three, I think because now, the characters have undergone enough change from what has essentially amounted to the end of the world, that makes them harder to relate with. Still, Pfeffer does fantastically at allowing the reader to see the many facets of the dynamic relationships within her story. A great read!
