First he packs his knapsack with important supplies like chewing gum, lollipops, and lots of rubber bands. Then he stows away on a ship headed for the island. There he’ll meet many animals who try to stop him, but Elmer has a few tricks up his sleeve . . . or more precisely, in his knapsack. One way or another, he will rescue the dragon!

First published in 1948, My Father’s Dragon is a classic that has delighted generations. Now, for the first time, this beautiful gift edition features fully colorized art from the original publication a new foreword from New York Times bestselling author Philip Stead.

About the author

RUTH STILES GANNETT wrote My Father's Dragon just a few years after her graduation from Vassar College in 1944. It was an immediate success, becoming a Newbery Honor Book, and was soon followed by two sequels, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. In November 2022, My Father's Dragon became an animated movie on Netflix. An active supporter of child-friendly education, women’s rights, the environment and peace, today she lives on a farmhouse in Trumansburg, mother of seven daughters and grandmother of eight grandchildren.
