I love how, like a painter uses a few strokes that make us see all the details and depth for ourselves in their creation, Robert McCammon does this with words. All his characters feel like people I could meet in real life, and I root for them like friends. I had a difficult time putting this book down. I had many late nights. One of his best books in my opinion.

This was such an amazing book. The first half is a slower ride with tension building relentlessly, and once you pass the midway point it's non-stop action. The characters are amazing, as is the story, and you can really feel the heat and stress from this poor town. Loved the entire thing from start to finish.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I read it many years ago (long before PC's were available to the public!). Reading it again was just as enjoyable!! I always said it would make a great Sci-fi movie! I still think so.

About the author

One of the founders of the Horror Writers Association, Robert McCammon (b. 1952) is one of the country’s most accomplished authors of modern horror and historical fiction. Raised by his grandparents in Birmingham, Alabama, McCammon published his first novel, the Revelations-inspired Baal, when he was only twenty-six. His writings continued in a supernatural vein throughout the 1980s, producing such bestselling titles as Swan Song, The Wolf’s Hour, and Stinger.   In 1991 Boy’s Life won the World Fantasy Award for best novel. After his next novel, Gone South, McCammon took a break from writing to spend more time with his family. He did not publish another novel until 2002’s Speaks the Nightbird. Since then he has followed “fixer” Matthew Corbett in two sequels, The Queen of Bedlam and Mister Slaughter. His newest novel is The Five. McCammon and his family continue to live in Birmingham.
