About the author

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, essayist, and poet whose works are classics in the world of children’s literature. Born on November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Stevenson became famous with the adventure story Treasure Island, which was published in 1883. His other books, such as Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, have held equal attention for both children and adults.

Stevenson was a versatile writer. His essays and travel books are considered models of sophisticated English prose style, while the tender, simple poems in A Child’s Garden of Verses are regarded as masterpieces of children’s literature.

Stevenson died suddenly of a stroke on December 3, 1894.
