Making a resolution to address an alcohol or substance abuse issue is only the beginning. The real work begins when the alcoholic or addict acknowledges that something has to be done. In Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting! author Robert Boich details his battle with substance abuse and his decision to lead a sober lifestyle. He realized if he didnt change his life, he would be incarcerated or die all alone.

In this compelling, personal narrative, Boich shares his personal struggles and insights encountered during his first six months of recovery. A counselor once told him, An addict only has to change one thing: everything. Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting! describes the many changes Boich made in his life. More than just eliminating certain people and places from a daily routine, he illustrates how a successful recovery requires a brand-new approach in dealing with life.

Blending personal thoughts with helpful information, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting! discusses the ideas and tools used in an addicts early recovery. It shows that sobriety is much more than mere abstinence and that alcohol and drug use is a sign of deep personal problems that only true sobriety can address.

This book is about the authors’, Robert Boich, first 6 months of sobriety. You follow him through what happened in his life to make him come to the decision to quit drinking and as he learns lessons along the way. I will tell you that if you (1) are not a recovering alcoholic (2) fighting through a decision to quit drinking now or (3) have lived with an alcoholic, you probably will not care to read this book. Having said all of that, if you are one of those mentioned above, you will definitely see some of yourself in this book or at least understand what your loved one was going through when they quit drinking. I had someone very close to me quit drinking almost 4 years ago. I met them when they were drinking, so I only knew them based on how they acted when they were drunk – smiling, happy, loud, center of the crowd, etc. So when they stopped drinking, everyone around felt the need to stop acting a certain way, and expecting the “same ol” party person they had always known. It was very difficult as an outsider looking in and I can’t imagine just how hard it was for them. As my friend described it to me, when they came to the conclusion that drinking was killing them and decided they had to stop, it wasn’t just the act of putting down the bottle. Their entire life had to change; like the habits they had every night after work, ie: drive home, put down briefcase, pop a beer, pass out on couch – and the next day, rinse and repeat. Everything in their life must be changed because they have built their life around drinking – even though most of them have no idea they have done so. It must be so difficult. In Excuse me, Your Life is Waiting, Boice does a great job of describing some of these feelings. Through his journaling you see as he progresses and learns that he has to deal with his problem his own way. He describes the resentment he felt and expresses his feelings very honestly. As he learns to accept his life as an alcoholic, you see some very raw emotions come out. If this book is nothing else, it is honest! I view this book as being very helpful to those that are dealing with a recovering alcoholic. You can’t always glean the information you need from the person in recovery, and this book helps puts the alcoholics feelings into perspective. Robert Boich did a great job on the book and even better job on getting clean and sober!
