Là, il suit l'évolution des mentalités dans une Indochine en autarcie sous l'occupation de l'Axe et l'autorité de Vichy. Bercés par le slogan trompeur du respect de la souveraineté française par l'occupant, beaucoup ont été surpris par le coup de force japonais du 9 mars 1945. Le Japon avait pourtant annoncé dés 1938 "la fin du joug des Blancs sur les peuples d'Asie".
