Aunque en España se considera que las dos obras representativas de Calderón son "La vida es sueño" y "El alcalde de Zalamea", para la historia del teatro universal su obra clave es "El príncipe constante". La importancia de este drama histórico para el teatro europeo la tienen tres personajes esenciales en el teatro contemporáneo: el alemán Goethe, el ruso Meyerhold y el polaco Grotowski. El texto teatral de Calderón nos muestra el camino hacia el heroísmo a través de la extenuación física y la resistencia paciente frente a la tortura. Nos muestra también (tema muy calderoniano) la defensa de la libertad como experiencia y elección individual consciente frente a las imposiciones de la Razón de Estado.
