This book is a fascinating look inside the more rural society of the Reconstruction South. It begins towards the end of the Civil War and the harsh climate of everyone trying to survive. The story revolves around two freedmen, the white couple they work for and Georgia society. I was only able to read half of the book do to the drama and violence giving me nightmares. If you enjoyed Colson Whitehead's 'Underground' and the 2016-2017 television series based on the book, you will like this book.

The story showed the resilience of good people in an environment of evil. Hoping for the best for Isabelle, Prentiss, and Caleb.

Nathan Harris holds an MFA from the Michener Center at the University of Texas. The Sweetness of Water, his first novel, was a selection of Oprah’s Book Club, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and won the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. Harris was a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree in 2021. He lives in Seattle, Washington.
