Helpful Guide for Ulcerative Colitis Sufferers I have recently read the author’s similarly titled book for Crohn disease. The books share commonalities beyond titles, with many of the same tips and all the same recipes—I think, not I checked each one, of course! As such, this book suffered from many of the same faults as that one, though it did improve on one point. The improvement is that the introductory section in this book did not mention or show pictures of, shall we say, the more unpleasant physical aspects of ulcerative colitis. A few words here and there might put you off your supper, but nothing nearly as bad as the Crohn disease book. Nearly 40% of the book is taken up with charts about various foods and whether or not you should eat them depending upon if you're in remission or having an ulcerative colitis flare-up. I can't say anything as to the veracity of this information, but it is very detailed and could be extremely helpful to someone who has this condition (or who cooks for one who does). The language in the book is a little odd at times, as if the author was a non-native English speaker. That's fine, of course, but I believe that every book needs to be professionally edited, but certainly, ones written in English by a non-native speaker need to be, especially when the book is this extensive and covers such an important topic. As to the recipes themselves, most are relatively straightforward, and some even look yummy. The ingredient list better than I've seen in most recently published cookbooks, although the list is not in the order given in the directions. I consider this to be a crucial aspect for any recipe, and indeed, any cookbook. The directions themselves seem to be scant in places, especially if the reader isn't the best cook. I liked that the author included full nutritionals in the form of a food label. The book’s organization could be a little better. While it does have the standard divisions, some recipes within the sections should be in different ones, and some recipes need to be hived off into their own chapter. For instance, there's a chapter on, inexplicably to my view, cocktails and smoothies. I don't put these together in the same thought at all. Yet at the tail-end of the recipe section, there is a drinks chapter. Perhaps the cocktail should go there. Also, much of the appetizer section is actually soups and stews. Perhaps the author could have split these out into their own soup-and-stew chapter. When I read a cookbook that has both introductory material and recipes, I like all the non-recipe information to be together in the introduction section, not split up. This book has a nice section on meal planning at the end, and I think that would have been better put with the introductory material at the beginning. All that said, I think if you have ulcerative colitis or cook for someone who does, you might find this cookbook and guide handy as you try to navigate the sometimes difficult waters of what you can eat. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
