About this ebook

ā€˜DCI Matilda Darke is the perfect heroineā€™ Elly Griffiths

The second book in Michael Woodā€™s darkly compelling new crime series featuring DCI Matilda Darke. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride, Mark Billingham and Val McDermid.

When elderly George Rainsford goes to investigate a suspicious noise one night, the last thing he expects to find is a bloodbath. A man has been killed and a woman brutally beaten, left for dead.

The victims are Lois Craven and Kevin Hardaker ā€“ both married, but not to each other. Their spouses swear they knew nothing of the affair and, besides, they both have alibis for the attack. With nothing else to link the victims, the investigation hits a dead end.

The pressure is on for investigating officer, DCI Matilda Darke: thereā€™s a violent killer on the loose, and it looks like her team members are the new targets. With no leads and no suspects, itā€™s going to take all Matildaā€™s wits to catch him, before he strikes again.

I enjoyed the earlier books but this one was too fantastical and contrived...sadly the main character,Matilda, doesnt develop and remains one dimensional as well as being a pretty hopeless cop who seems oblivious of whats happening at any given time...and why are the women always drinking bottles of wine and eating cake? Maybe the next books improve but this was a bit tired..a bit like going round a roundabout for the umpteeth time..

I love UK crime fiction but this really isn't the best crime fiction to come out of the UK. Second book I have read in this series Thinking of the detectives isn't very logical or strategic which would be expected from high ranking detectives. Sequence of events is often disjointed.

Great read. Although I was sure I'd worked it out .....the twists were well timed and excellently written to make sure you couldn't put it down.
