A very sweet and thoughtful book about a boy being taught to appreciate what he has by his nana. What makes this one stand out is the beautiful language author Matt de la Peña uses to convey CJ's world. This is the first picture book to win the Newbery Medal, and it deserves it. Christian Robinson's delightful, colorful illustrations earned him a Caldecott Honor as well. I love this book and think it belongs in all collections that serve children.

A wonderful book for parents to read to their children. It says so much more than the words on the pages.

Matt de la Peña is the Newbery Medal–winning author of Last Stop on Market Street.
