Marissa Meyer nació en Tacoma, Washington y asistió a la Universidad Luterana del Pacífico , donde recibió un grado en escritura creativa. Antes de escribir Cinder, Meyer trabajó como editora de libros durante cinco años y escribió Sailor Moon fan fiction bajo el seudónimo de Alicia Blade. En una entrevista con The News-Tribune , dijo que hacer el fan fiction le ayudó a aprender el oficio de escribir, le dio una respuesta instantánea y le enseñó cómo tomar la crítica.
