About this ebook

The thrilling finale to the New York Times bestselling Young Elites series from “hit factory” Marie Lu

There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all she's gained.

When a new danger appears, Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds, putting not only herself at risk, but every Elite. In order to preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu concludes Adelina's story with this haunting and hypnotizing final installment to the Young Elites series.

Adelina’s story comes to its conclusion in this plot wrought with world-ending stakes. A year after the ending of The Rose Society, the queen of her own kingdom and the Sunlands, she has been expanding her empire through brute force, and ruling them through fear and intimidation. Her powers, as predicted by Rafaelle, have been working against her, whispering paranoia in her mind and giving her nightmares and hallucinations. In short, she is Not Okay. Meanwhile, a kingdom away, Rafaelle has been hitting the library books hard, and in his research, finds legends that might explain the powers of the Young Elites, and a possible way to save them from their own powers. Violetta finally falling sick is the catalyst for them to pursue onward, both Adelina and Rafaella. As they all have to band together on the most awkward squad trip, the characters get a chance to resolve, if not settle, all the bad blood between them. This book was rough to read – mainly because I have an unconscious aversion to reading finales of the series, and because of all the things Adelina is going through, and doing because of it. Her journey as a character has not been a heroic one, as we all know, because she gives in to her fear and holds tightly to what power she has. So for her to go on a dangerous journey, one which may cost her her powers, is a complicated choice to explain and Lu does it well. It is different in its form than the previous two books, as it is less about the backstabbing and politics, and more about a quest. As for the ending, it felt very natural in the conclusion it gave to one of the most important character arcs. One of the things that I didn’t like about it was how it felt a bit rushed towards the end, compared to the time it takes to set up the events for that ending. Another was Magiano – who was merely a Love Interest Trope that wasn’t used well in the story, especially with the way the epilogue described their relationship. It felt there wasn’t enough time given to develop them, and with the year-long jump it is like we missed out on that part of it. Overall, though, it satisfied me immensely as a conclusion.

One of the best endings to a book I've ever seen. No amount of preparation could've stopped this book from ripping my heart out 💔. Nonetheless, Marie Lu is a fantastic author and I'm excited for her new series!
