A narrativa se articula a partir de um triângulo amoroso formado por Adelaide, Tancredo e seu pai. Esse triângulo é desfeito com a derrota de Tancredo. Cria-se, então, um segundo triângulo formado por Tancredo, Úrsula e seu tio. Mas há, também, uma tríade, formada por três personagens negros, que vão aparecendo ao longo da narrativa, cuja importância vai tomando proporções cada vez maiores: Túlio, Mãe Susana e Antero que, juntamente com o jovem Tancredo, dão o tom diferente à narrativa. Esses personagens armam uma trama incrível nos tempos de um Brasil escravocrata.
