About this ebook

“[A] provocative, suspenseful work . . . the story plays skillfully to teens’ curiosity about the mechanics of addiction and its manic, lurid subculture.” —Booklist

When Joe meets Candy, it seems like a regular boy-meets-girl scenario. They chat over coffee, she gives him her number, and he writes her a song. But then Joe is drawn into Candy’s world—a world of drugs, violence, and desperation. As the dark truth about Candy’s life emerges, Joe finds himself facing real danger at every twist and turn. Soon Joe’s conflicting emotions begin to mirror Candy’s, and he understands that falling in love just might be worth the struggle. This intoxicating tale of heartache, danger, and hope will enthrall teen readers.

“A story as sharp as the title is sweet, with something dark lurking inside and no cozy answers . . . Some words of warning: Candy may hook you too.” —The Guardian

“Versatile English author Brooks infuses his latest tale with a romantic—even mythic—grandeur sure to enthrall his fans . . . This story’s gritty street smarts will keep thrill-seekers more than entertained, while Joe’s orphic rescue mission into the netherworld of addiction gives more thoughtful readers plenty to ponder.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Brooks’s plotting is masterful, and the action twists and builds to a frenzied and violent climax.” —School Library Journal

“Brooks is one of the best young adult writers around. Get this book. Word-of-mouth will do the rest” —The Irish Times

Candy ia about your basic boy meets girl and the whole love fiasco. Unfortunately it's not as simple as that, when boy meets girl he gives up everything for her; changing his life forever. Joe is just average and loves music, in a currently succesful and then suddenly meets a stunning girl named Candy. His lust for her starts turning into love and learns that shes a drug addict and prostitute. Blinded by love, all he wants to do is try and help her so he may stay with her as long as he can. In this story are twists turns and pain. What Kevin Brooks did really well in this book was show the sacrifices and pain an average person will do for someone who they think is worth it, and showing how once you experience the feelings and passion with your first love. It changes you. Exactly what happened to Joe when he went through so many complications with Candy and seeing things he shouldn't have seen. But it was all for Candy and left him a changed person at the end. What I didn't like about the book was how predictable it was going to be because Joe's character is predictable with who he is. I recommend this book for those who enjoy novels that portray plausible scenarios in love and the not so classic boy meets girl; but instead boy meets girl and gives up everything for her.

This book was a head on page turner- it's accuracy and direct knowledge to the subjects of drug addiction and prostitution are great, along with the impeccable storyline. With the heartwarming and moving story Candy tells, you also learn a few life lessons along the way. I would definately recommend Candy to everyone, as it is possibly my favourite book Brooks has done.
