A original and lively, though rather dark novel about a ragtag group of travel companions who fall in together during the descent of the Black Plague on England. It's billed as a reinterpretation of Chaucer's _Canterbury Tales_, but I think that's a somewhat deceiving characterization -- this has a plot arc all its own, with pleasing-to-puzzle-out mysteries and a big dollop of occult magic. Though the ending was a bit disappointing, this was a strong effort and I'd be interested to read more by Maitland.

About the author

Karen Maitland has a doctorate in psycholinguistics. She traveled and worked in many parts of the world, from the Arctic Circle to Africa, before finally settling in the medieval city of Lincoln in England. Her British debut novel, The White Room, was short-listed for the Authors’ Club of Great Britain Best First Novel Award. She is at work on her next novel, The Owl Killers.
