The period in Korea that it is set in was completely fleshed out and kept me fully immersed in the story. The characters are well written with distinct voices. I enjoyed every second of it and can't wait for her next release. The only weakness is that it was never fully explained why the new religion was despised so much and how that would impact the lives of the citizens, the religion(s) of the area where never stated nor expressed in a way that would convince me why those are better.
About the author
June Hur was born in South Korea and raised in Canada, except for the time when she moved back to Korea and attended high school there. She studied History and Literature at the University of Toronto. She began writing her debut novel, The Silence of Bones, after obsessing over books about Joseon Korea. When she's not writing, she works as an assistant for the public library or can be found journaling at a coffee shop. June is the bestselling author of The Silence of Bones, The Forest of Stolen Girls and The Red Palace, and currently lives in Toronto with her husband and daughter.
