I first read this around 1978. It left a tremendous impression on me and as i got older i wanted to re-read it...just one problem...i could not remember the name of the book or the author! The only thing i could remember was that it was a hardback book with a purple cover and featured a warlock and an old woman who smoked cigars- Fast forward 35 years and tbe arrival of the internet. Armed with those last 2 clues i was finally able to not only find out the name of the book and aufbor but found out that someone had conveniently put all three Lewis Barnevelt books into one volume called The Best of John Belairs and lo and behold it was available on Amazon! In closing i do not feel the comparisons to Harry Potter are warranted. For o e thi g this book was written 25 years or more before HP was even a gleem in J K Rowlings eye.

I feel as though opportunities to show character development were hurried or skipped all together. But overall it was an interesting book.

This is a fun quick read. My only complaint is this isn't worth $8. This should be a 2.99 buy
