About the author

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theater director, and critic. His monumental work, 'Faust', alone has placed him firmly in the pantheon of Western literature. Born in the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt, Goethe had a profound impact on the Romantic Movement, deeply influencing literature through his rich array of works. Among his early success was the novel 'The Sorrows of Young Werther', which gained him widespread acclaim and made him a literary celebrity at the age of twenty-five. His literary versatility extended to epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of meters and styles; his numerous poems evince a classical precision and verve. Goethe's body of work includes epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of metres and styles; prose and verse dramas; memoirs; an autobiography; literary and aesthetic criticism; treatises on botany, anatomy, and color; and four novels. Besides 'Faust', his works include 'Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship', a seminal novel in the Bildungsroman genre, and 'The Sorrows of Young Werther', a foundational work of Romantic literature. His scientific texts, such as 'The Metamorphosis of Plants', contributed to the evolution of botany, demonstrating his far-reaching influence.
