Egmont ist ein Trauerspiel des deutschen Dichters und Dramatikers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Es wurde 1775 begonnen und war 1788 im Druck. Erstmals aufgeführt wurde das Stück im Jahre 1789 von der Kochschen Truppe. Die erste Uraufführung fand am 9. Januar 1789 in Mainz statt, am 15. Mai folgte die Uraufführung in Frankfurt am Main. Egmont spielt in der Stadt Brüssel während des Aufstands der Niederländer 1566-68 gegen die spanische Herrschaft; das Ende des Trauerspiels entspricht historisch dem Anfang des Achtzigjährigen Krieges. Zu jener Zeit wird Brüssel wie ganz Belgien und Holland von den Spaniern beherrscht. Teile des niederländischen Adels (Geusen) verbünden sich mit den Protestanten, um die religiöse und politische Unterdrückung durch die Spanier zu beenden ... (aus wikipedia.de)
