Jewgenij Iwanowitsch Samjatin wurde 1884 in der mittelrussischen Provinzstadt Lebedjan geboren. Während seiner Studienzeit schloss er sich der Fraktion der Bolschewiki an. Im Jahr 1920 schrieb er den Zukunftsroman WIR. Nachdem das Erscheinen seines Romans WIR im Westen zur Ächtung des Autors in seiner Heimat geführt hatte, emigrierte er nach Frankreich. Samjatin starb 1937 in Paris
