About this ebook

The touching true story of an indefatigably loyal dog

While James Percy FitzPatrick was working as a transport rider in South Africa, 1 of his companion dogs—a well-bred Staffordshire Bull Terrier—had a litter of 6 puppies. All of the newborn terriers were perfect, healthy specimens—except for the runt, “a poor, miserable little rat of a thing about half the size of the others.” This sickly pup caught FitzPatrick’s attention and unexpectedly grew up to become a paragon of loyalty and bravery, serving as the author’s canine companion for many years to come.

Jock of the Bushveld is a must-read for any dog lover.

Absolutely THE best family reading material ever. Even before I became a SBT - Staffordshire Bull Terrier fan - fanatical fanatic fan at the very least - many many years ago, I watched this DVD with Bobby, our girls ( 2 legged variety lol) and of all people, my mother - of all the memories very very few good involving she & I in the vacinity of each other this is the best I've got - after she purchased it fur 99 C at the reject shop in Wendouree village shopping centre to amuse the kids, and right from the start this true - yes TRUE - story of a man and his dog, Jock & what a dog, this captured the spirit of Percy & Jock. It'll make U laugh, amaze U & make U cry Ur heart out - I guarantee it's a movie U will never forget. Many years - over 20 - I was awed by the fact that my obsession is U - Stafford's same breed - to quote Iva Davies from icehouse - and I constantly tell potentials families & fans of this most fantastic fantabulous fabulous furry fun filled & funny as breed of dog.

About the author

Sir James Percy FitzPatrick (1862-1931) was a South African author and politician whose classic children’s book, Jock of the Bushveld (1907) was based on his experiences during the legendary gold rush in the Transvaal region of South Africa. Years later, FitzPatrick entertained his children with stories of his youthful adventures, and was persuaded by his friend Rudyard Kipling to collect them into a book. An immediate bestseller, this story of a beloved Staffordshire bull terrier who grows from the runt of the litter into a brave and loyal trail dog has never been out of print.
