About this ebook

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb takes us to the New York City of 2060, where Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces down a cop killer...

Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she’s been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she’s taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn’t just “one of us.”

Eve starts questioning everyone while her husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman’s life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts. The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine’s guns, badge, and a note from her killer: “You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I’ll be sending yours to somebody else.”

But Eve Dallas doesn’t take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that’s a promise.

Promises In Death highlights one of the main characters in the series, Chief Medical Examiner Li Morris (see, I didn't even know his first name until this book!). Seeing him on the opposite side of the table, so to speak, breathes fresh life into the series and further solidifies his personal and professional relationships with Eve Dallas. It also sheds more light on Roarke's past as, once again, his past affects Eve's present. A good read.

This book will tear at your heartstrings. While it's got a great sadness for the murder of a good friends loved one, one who is also a fellow cop, it'll keep you turning the pages to find out how Eve discovers and traps the killers. As always, it's heartwarming to see this tough as nails cop, who was always a loner and had no one she could trust, relax with her close group of friends and accept their love, their help. With every book these bonds grow stronger, and she realizes she loves them back. As she is socially awkward, and she flies into a panic with cold sweats at the very thought of throwing a bridal shower in her home, it's a good feeling. I just love this character. Can't wait to read the next! Suzie
