Harry Martinson föddes 1904 i Jämshög i Blekinge och avled i Stockholm 1978. Under sitt liv belönades han med många olika utmärkelser, däribland De Nios pris (1938), SvD:s litteraturpris (1944), Bellmanspriset (1951 och 1962), Litteraturfrämjandets stora pris (1955) och Nobelpriset 1974 tillsammans med Eyvind Johnson.
Cikada publicerades första gången 1953.
