يؤكد شراح فلوبير، معتمدين على تواريخ دفاتره ومخطوطاته، أنه كان يمارس الكتابة الأدبية منذ أن عرف الكتابة – أي معالجة حروف الأبجدية. أما النصوص المترجمة ههنا، وهي مؤرخة كلها، فقد كتبها بين سن الخامسة عشرة والعشرين. وهي لم تنشر إلا بعد وفاته بعشرين عاما، إذ ظهرت روايته القصيرة «مذكرات مجنون» في 1900 م، ثم راحت طبعات نصوص صباه تتوالى، مغتنية بنصوص جديدة كل مرة.
