This story takes place in Manor Farm, where an uprising of a group of farm animals against their human oppressors sets the stage for a powerful revolution. After a successful revolt, they create some commandments known as the Seven Commandments. However, as time passes, the once-idealistic revolution begins to unravel. The pigs gradually consolidate power and privilege for themselves, betraying the principles of equality and justice they had championed. The other animals find themselves oppressed once again and their dreams of liberation are turned into a nightmare.

About the author

George Orwell (1903-1950), pseudônimo de Eric Arthur Blair, nasceu em Motihari, na Índia britânica, onde seu pai trabalhava para o império inglês. Em 1911, mudou-se com a mãe e as quatro irmãs para a Inglaterra. Em 1922, Orwell trabalhou na polícia do império, na Birmânia (hoje, Myanmar). Dessa experiência surgiram o romance Dias na Birmânia (1934) e vários ensaios. De volta a Londres, resolveu viver como mendigo, repetindo a experiência em Paris. A partir dela, escreveu Na pior em Paris e Londres (1933). Foi adepto dos ideais comunistas, que abandonou ao descobrir as atrocidades e a falta de liberdade nos países que adotavam esse regime. Jornalista, crítico e romancista, George Orwell é considerado um dos mais influentes escritores do século XX, famoso principalmente pela obra 1984, publicada em 1949, cujo enredo se passa num país fictício de regime político totalitário. A fazenda dos animais (1945), traduzida originalmente no Brasil como A revolução dos bichos, é outra obra sua que fala de opressão e exploração; atravessou gerações e continua sendo admirada em vários países. Sempre crítico dos sistemas totalitários e opressores praticados pelos capitalistas, George Orwell é uma voz importante da literatura clássica na defesa da igualdade entre os homens. É dele a frase "Todos os animais são iguais mas alguns animais são mais iguais que os outros".
