Funny in Farsi chronicles the American journey of Dumas’s wonderfully engaging family: her engineer father, a sweetly quixotic dreamer who first sought riches on Bowling for Dollars and in Las Vegas, and later lost his job during the Iranian revolution; her elegant mother, who never fully mastered English (nor cared to); her uncle, who combated the effects of American fast food with an army of miraculous American weight-loss gadgets; and Firoozeh herself, who as a girl changed her name to Julie, and who encountered a second wave of culture shock when she met and married a Frenchman, becoming part of a one-couple melting pot.

In a series of deftly drawn scenes, we watch the family grapple with American English (hot dogs and hush puppies?—a complete mystery), American traditions (Thanksgiving turkey?—an even greater mystery, since it tastes like nothing), and American culture (Firoozeh’s parents laugh uproariously at Bob Hope on television, although they don’t get the jokes even when she translates them into Farsi).

This is the first book I have finished that is not a children's book, I was assigned to read it for a college course. I loved it, I laughed, I cried, and will read more of Mrs. Firoozeh Dumas without it being an assignment, thank you to my wonderful teacher who assigned such a lovely read Mrs. Lisa Strahan! Beautiful simply beautiful!

I loved this book. I laughed a lot while reading it. It goes into the perspectives of American culture and experience as viewed through the eyes of Iranian traditions and viewpoints in a thoughtful yet humorous way.

Enjoyed reading every chapter of it. It's amazing to learn how much immigrants' challenges, despite the difference, are similar to those from 40 years ago.

Firoozeh Dumas lives in California, where she continues to tell stories. An entire generation of American school children have now read Firoozeh’s stories and have seen their own families represented and reflected. Her nerd dream came true on July 4, 2022, when she was a clue on Jeopardy.
